Au Revoir .... a bientot at Home

14th November 2008

The European leg of the trip is drawing to a close and we will soon be bidding a fond farewell to our family and this lovely part of the world we have called home for six months.

Our trip from Zermatt to Interlaken included the excitement of putting our car on a train for a 20 minute trip through the mountain! Interlaken and the surrounding areas are breathtakingly beautiful and our apartment was once again comfortable and convenient. The one down side to Switzerland has been the cost of things. We have found it to be much more expensive than the other countries we have visited. After an easy drive from Interlaken to Lucern we spent an afternoon walking around this charming city discovering the lake, bridges, a beautiful “pink” church and the famous Lion Statue.

We then travelled to Metz which is also an amazing city with many wonderful historic buildings. The Cathedral was magnificent and included a spiritual route written in French, English and German, which was quite inspirational. We have found that the cathedrals of northern France and England are truly the most spectacular of all we have seen.  After leaving Metz we drove to Verdun and looked at the World War 1 sites which were quite sobering. There was a solemnity about the whole area which gave us pause for thought.

We are now back in Charmes with Nana and have finished the sorting and packing and tomorrow we will see Philippe, Marie-Claude and Clemence ( Anne and Romain are at their respective University and Prep school) so that Alison can bid her farewells before winging her way to Nepal in the afternoon.

Thank you for sticking with us throughout our wonderful journey. Hope you have enjoyed the website!
